Olive Yew gives back to the community

It’s been forever since the last blog post and boy, have we been busy! Recently, the whole gang here at Olive Yew went to take a tour of a local Charity called Friendship Trays.

Friendship Trays is a Charlotte based organization that delivers more than 750 meals daily to elderly, handicapped, and convalescing people who are unable or greatly restricted in their ability to prepare or secure meals. Friendship Trays showed us how they operate as a whole as well as each branch of volunteers. From cooks to packagers to delivery drivers, everyone seemed very determined to help the community and share the importance of their mission.

Everyone we met was happy and very helpful. Upon entrance through the wrong door, the head chef cheerfully took the time to walk me to the correct location – and it wasn’t a short walk to the kitchen. Speaking of the kitchen, it is quite impressive, clean and well organized. Our gal, Gigi, chose to help in this area since cooking is her specialty (the rest of us drive a route!) Here’s a picture of where the magic happens…

They also have fully organic gardens all over the Charlotte area that have helped to supply over 10,000 pounds of fresh fruits and veggies to the community. They’ll even help you build your own back-yard garden so that you can donate a portion back! Now that’s full circle!

By the end of the tour everyone was ready to start volunteering immediately, we made the commitment for Olive Yew to permanently take over one of the delivery routes every Thursday, as well as helping out in the kitchen when we can.

The amount of volunteers it takes to keep an organization like this running is immense and they rely heavily on their community to participate.  If you feel so inclined, you can do a simple Google search for charities in your area or search for your city on http://www.charitynavigator.org.

If you would like to volunteer for Friendship Trays, visit them at friendshiptrays.org.

We’d love to hear from all current volunteers as well! Post a comment and tell us about where you volunteer and why.
